My farther past over 5yrs ago. I am his only child. How do I know if he really left me any inheritance.?

I live in Atlanta and he was living in Iowa. But we kept in touch. He told I was his beneficiary before he past. But when he past his side of the family did not contact me. My mother did. They buried him 2 days after he past.
