Why did my macaroni turn out so bad?

I don't often cook, but I decided to boil myself some macaroni today. I'm pretty sure I followed the directions correctly...But when I tasted it after it was finished, it was very chewy, sticky, gummy and just had a weird taste and texture. Can anyone please point out where I went wrong?
